I have zero sympathy for motorists. Events like Sunday Streets is what makes this city a great place, and places like Kansas City boring.

I drive in this city a lot, but I loved taking my bike down to Sunday Streets and riding it along the route, enjoying all that was offered. This city has many routes to take to get just about anywhere you want to go. Perhaps more advanced and widespread notice would help them plan their driving routes better? I don't thinks this event should stop when it's only one day (and not even long enough to really enjoy the event). It's more than a fair trade off. I want more Sunday Streets events.

There was too little $$$ spent by the City to promote this event. They need to step up to the plate and let the people know about the event, not depend on charities to do all the legwork. NYC did a similar event three times this summer and the turnout was huge. That is because Mayor Bloomberg's office really got behind it.
Here is a short film from the NYC carfree day.

Hopefully SF won't be as cautious next year, because these events were a huge success in 2008! If we want families to stay in the City, this is a good start.

Great video and great idea for the city. If people had to rely on their bicycles more vs. their autos, wouldn't life be great? I wish I was in the city to ride there, and I agree, it should go longer- all day sounds great! Cyclists have to deal with drivers all the time, and it is so great not to have to worry about cycling with so many cars around!

@Jackie: I agree re: better notification. All the stuck motorists I spoke with hadn't known the event was taking place. If there had been better notification I wonder if the traffic issue would have been abated.
In contrast, the Howard St. closure between 3rd and 4th for the Oracle Conference has been plastered all around the City and Bay Area highways. As a cabbie and a motorist I am conscious to avoid that area as much as possible.

Another good one, Kieran. I loved hearing both sides, and your point about the tourists (and their impact on our economy) was very well taken. Better promotion by the city, and then motorists just have to deal. I would like to see more of this sort of event happening - and hey, if it weren't for you and VidSF, I wouldn't have known about it at all!
